BioModels x BioQuant x BioMedX Team VPE Hackathon

Welcome to the Team VPE Hackathon summary website! This site provides an overview of the hackathon, including key information, team projects, and outcomes.

About the Hackathon

11 mathematical models of human disease were hacked by 10 teams during our Hackathon in collaboration with EBI-EMBL, Heidelberg University, and AI Health Innovation Cluster 🎉.

Find out more about the Hackathon here.

The challenge:

Take a published mathematical model of human disease and curate to BioModels standards by:

  • recoding the mathematical equations,
  • reproducing the published figures, and
  • reannotating the model components with standard ontologies.

The result:

  • 🎖️ 7 teams (22 participants) participated on-site, and 3 teams (12 participants) participated on-line over two days on August 28 to 29.
  • 🎖️ Diverse team compositions of biologists, data scientists, and computational modelers reflecting the team compositions and competencies needed to build virtual patients in industry.
  • 🎖️ 11 mathematical models were hacked with 2 models were completely curated, 2 models were recoded and reproduced, 2 models were recoded and almost reproduced, 4 models were partially recoded, and 1 model reproduced.

Conclusion

The BioModels developed during the hackathon have shown promising results in terms of reproducibility of the published mathematical models of human immune system related diseases. However, recoding and annotating published models still remains challenging.

Future Work

  1. Validation: Curate/annotate incomplete models.
  2. Publish: Prepare the models for publishing in BioModels database.
